November 14, 2012—Trona, California—A man was killed in an accident involving a semi truck in Trona on Thursday.  The man was pinned between the semi and trailer and sustained upper body trauma.  The accident occurred on Main Street around 6:45 p.m., according to the San Bernardino Sunofficers responding to the scene found the man pinned between the tractor and trailer and have not released any details on the cause of the accident.  Pending notification of relatives, the man’s name has not been released.

The incident is being investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Division as well as the San Bernardino County District Attorney.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this man’s family in this terrible tragedy.

Semi Trucks Can Cause Deadly Accidents

More than half a million large trucks were involved in collisions in 2010, with over 100,000 people being injured and 5,000 people dying in these accidents, according to the Legal Funding Industry.  This represents an increase of 1,800 deaths over the figures for 2009, and industry officials are considering several factors that may have contributed to this sudden jump in death rates.

One reason may be relatively simple.  More people are on the roads working and traveling for pleasure as the economy improves and the largest percentage of victims who perish in large truck accidents are passenger car occupants.  With more cars on the road, the chances of being involved in a collision with a large truck increase.

What Caused This Victim’s Death?

Large trucks do not only cause death on the highway, but can also be dangerous when parked, as this accident shows.  Because of the complicated mechanical devices involved in connecting semi-tractors with trailers, there is always the potential for injury and death.

However, in this case, there do not appear to have been any witnesses to the accident, which means that the police will have to use physical evidence available at the scene to try to figure out what happened.  A professional accident reconstruction expert may also be able to lend expertise to the investigation and answer questions about how the accident happened.

What Are The Liability Issues in this Accident?

Depending on the findings of the investigation, there may be liability issues involved for the truck’s manufacturer, various parts manufacturer, or the trucking company that employed the driver.  A personal injury lawyer specializing in vehicle liability can evaluate the case and help the family determine if they can collect damages from any or all of these groups.
